Crocheted Cat Bagel Pattern

A pile of small, unfelted, crocheted rings in bright colours. The rings are flat, donut-shaped circles made from yarn. The colours include red, royal blue, bright green, purple, white, and a half blue and half white one. They are scattered randomly on a light-coloured surface, overlapping each other in a loose mound. Each ring has a slightly textured, stitched pattern and a hole in the centre about a third of the ring’s overall width. A heap of small, felted, crocheted rings on a plain light surface. The rings are all about the same size, shaped like flat donuts with a hole in the centre. They are made in solid bright colours: green, red, purple, blue, and off‑white. The rings are loosely stacked and overlapping in a heap, with no particular pattern or arrangement. The yarn looks soft and slightly fuzzy, and the stitches are tight and even, giving each ring a firm, rounded edge.

Nightshade and Latte are fiends for woolly toys, but both have a tendency to attempt to swallow any tubular ones whole. This is unfortunate and inadvisable. So they get bagels. Or doughnuts. Round things with a hole in the middle.

As of yet they have not choked on any, nor have they eaten any, though a few have ended up in human toilets courtesy Latte who likes to float toys in undefended loos. (Lid down, whenever he visits.)

This is my (not actually any good at crocheting) version of Melissa Trenado's adorable and much better Mini Donuts Cat Toy (Ravelry link). My version is smaller, not stuffed, less fiddly, and a lot less cute. But Latte rips through stuffed toys like it's his job so this is wot he gets.

I use a 3 mm crochet hook, and feltable wool which is appropriate for the hook size. My favourite wool these days is Trysil Garn's Sportsgarn (Ravelry link) and has a gauge of 22-23 sts to 10 cm on 3.5-4 mm knitting needles. I also have to keep reminding myself that generally (bleached) white wool doesn't felt, and thus avoid it.

Crocheted Cat Bagels

  1. Leaving a longish tail, make a slipknot and ch 14,
  2. Join with a sc in the first chain stitch made, then sc in each of the 13 remaining chains. I put a bit of waste yarn here as a stitch marker. (14 sc)
  3. *sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat from ∗ to ∗ to the end (21 sc)
  4. *sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat from ∗ to ∗ to the end (28 sc)
  5. sc around (28 sc)
  6. *sc in the next 2 sts, sc2tog in the next st*, repeat from ∗ to ∗ to the end (21 sc)
  7. *sc in the next st, sc2tog in the next st*, repeat from ∗ to ∗ to the end (14 sc)
  8. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing it up. If waste yarn was used as a marker, remove it now.
  9. Fasten the first tail well on what will be the inside of the bagel, then sew the inside of the bagel hole together using the second, longer tail. Again, fasten the tail well.
  10. Felt as hard as you can.
