A Beginner’s Adventures in Linux

Yesterday I installed Kubuntu on my Win11 gaming PC. This is the first time I’ve touched Linux in about two decades, and it went surprisingly well, to be honest. After fighting with a couple of minor issues, once Steam was installed, installing games has been super-easy. As has installation of various applications like Obsidian, Nextcloud, Vivaldi, and 1Password.

However, the hunt for my other standard programs has begun. I need a text expander, and as a happy Typinator (macOS), and Beeftext (Win), I was surprised to learn that it’s apparently not much of a thing on Linux. I’d previously tried Espanso as its cross-platform, so I’m giving it a try.

Minor Issue 1

The KDE Wallet kept popping up and making a right nuisance of itself. However, that was my fault for choosing to allow auto login during the Kubuntu install. Getting rid of the problem was as easy as opening KDE Wallet and unchecking "Enable the KDE wallet subsystem“.

Minor Issue 2

I had difficulties with Steam insisting on using my boot disk as the only disk available, but somehow I managed to fiddle with something, and it gave up, allowing me to choose my Games disk as the default disk to install Steam games to. I really wish I remembered what I did, because no doubt it will come up again at some point.
