378 vs 387 vs 403 vs 884

4 portrait drawings of the same woman’s head and neck, all in 3/4 view, showing artistic progress over time. Top left: A simple line drawing, jawline is angular, ear simplified, no shading, just flat outlines. Top right: A more refined version, with more proportionate facial features, ear and jaw are better defined, and light shading is added to suggest depth. Hair is still suggested with simple lines. Bottom left: A larger, more detailed drawing. The face is more realistic, and has more shading. The brows are darker and fuller, the lips are shaded, and the cheekbones and jaw have smoother gradients. The back of the head and hair are lightly sketched. Bottom right: A more realistic graphite portrait of the same woman. The hair is fully rendered, tied or swept back with many fine strands. The skin has smooth shading with detailed highlights and shadows on the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, and neck. The ear and neck muscles are clearly defined. I wasn’t feeling too happy with today’s drawing. I was just too tired to spend as much time as I’d like getting everything more accurate, but it was what it was. However, it picked up more likes on Mastodon than my drawings usually get, so I took another look at it.

And, no. It's not perfect. But I took the time to dig out the older attempts of the same reference, and even I can see I’ve improved! So, yay! I’m getting better!!
